Lincoln: The Great Emancipator?

Category: Education | 4841 views | Created: 11/14/12
Steven Spielberg and the current presidential election have brought Lincoln back to public attention. He is the president who preserved the union and is credited with abolishing slavery. Who was the real Lincoln?

Do you think school teach the real Lincoln? As a teacher do your resources used in class shed light on the topics you cover on this board?

You mean the book--there's not a lot in there. I like to use books to help students come up with their own opinions by studying history from traditional, revisionist, alternative angles... it's fun to watch them come up with their own thoughts.

Me, too. He's on my list. I think he's one of the most fascinating people in history. I love to look at the great presidents who served at really sucky times--what would the course of the nation have been with a weaker person?

True...I got the honor of sitting with Eric Foner at Columbia--he was my grad advisor's mentor, and Larry Hudson, another authority on this period, was my undergrad Faculty in Residence--an enlightening influence for an undergrad not yet mature enough to fully appreciate such genius.
