I wish I'd been introduced to this as a kid.

I do a modified sun salutation with my 1st graders at our morning meeting. I think it helps them focus and come together as a group.

can children be more prone to injury from more challenging poses since they are still growing?

I'm not a doctor, but my experience with yoga and kids informs me that they appear to be less prone to injury than adults. I find that my adult students need to be much more careful with alignment and such to stay healthy. Often, kids are so limber that the more challenging poses are often done with great ease. Of course all kids are different so I base my work with each of them individually. On the other hand, for many reasons, I would not recommend that a child sit in a pose for extremely long periods of time. But a general daily yoga practice can be great for most kids!

Introducing children to yoga is a great foundation for mindfulness and the idea of mindful meditation. Its a simple practice, and worth exploring if you're interested in how Yoga affects children's mental health.
