Hydraulic Fracturing in New York

Category: Politics | 8693 views | Created: 07/22/12
This board will document the ongoing debate in the state of New York about whether to allow Hydraulic Fracturing (HydroFracking), a controversial method for extracting natural gas. Currently, a moratorium is in place state-wide, since 2010.

New York is such an interesting case to follow IMO because there is a great deal of recoverable shale (Marcellus), however, it's quite a complicated process as to who actually wants what and why. But if NY doesn't allow fracking, that's quite a large statement, given the potential.

Glad you're documenting this issue.

Thanks - it needs to be documented. This same debate is happening across the world as fracking expands. NY is a very interesting (and close to home) case study...

Update: 3 JAN 2012 | "The state’s Health Department found in an analysis it prepared early last year that the much-debated drilling technology known as hydrofracking could be conducted safely in New York, according to a copy obtained by The New York Times from an expert who did not believe it should be kept

Update: Gov Cuomo recently extended the decision deadline another 90 days...

This is my new favorite site explaining it. It's not a lot of words, unless you count pictures as a thousand words each, but it's more accessible than most. http://www.dangersoffracking.com/

It's October and no official remarks yet? Very curious...

Yeah, I'm wondering what kind of pressure Cuomo will get from the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party in NY. I mean, The greenies aren't thrilled with Fracking, no? Plus... I want to be able to say, "I wanna Frack NY ALL NIGHT LONG." This should be a thing.

He's getting significant pressure from the industry as well as local opposition. The Department of Environmental Conservation, who is charged with 'informing' Gov Cuomo is particularly questionable at this time, giving preferential treatment to the industry. "Gas industry representatives have enjoyed meetings with high-level officials, sneak peaks at the draft environmental impact statement, and same-day responses to emailed requests, as revealed by the recent Environmental Working Group report based on FOIL documents."

My general take is that if what is happening in NY becomes the model for future fracking development in the US or around the globe, fracking will become a mess, politically, and potentially environmentally.

I think fracking *could* be done right (see my articles on it at jpinfluence.com), but there's a whole lot more going here than just the science and technology.

This is a great board. I've heard a lot about Fracking and I'm still unsure what I think about it. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. I've gone back and forth about fracking myself... What I know for sure is that, at least in NY, the process by which it is being debated is very, very questionable, and my confidence that NY would be able to properly regulate its development is very low. How Gov Cuomo makes his decision will be very, very interesting - and I think in a significant way much of the US (and global) energy industry is watching how it unfolds.
