Probably the ebst place you could possibly be during lighting - It's a giant Faraday cage! See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage

How easy is it to get one of these shipping containers? I see there are tons at ports around the globe, but can anyone just purchase these?

Anyone can buy them. Here's one site offering containers. http://containerauction.com/

Isn't there a possibility to just replace those wooden floors with fresh ones?

In Australia there are a lot of underground emergency shelters found on private land. The shipping containers as a structure make the shelter attainable, comfortable and practical.

how do they insulate these things?

I think my biggest concern -- aside from the noise when it rains -- is how metal creaks when it corrodes a bit. If you live anywhere with ground vibration, it could be A Thing. I see that the ventilation issues highlighted by The Wire have already been alluded to. ;)

I bet these things are really loud when it rains!

Crazy. I've been a little wary of shipping containers since the second season of the Wire. But these look nice.
